Certifications for Exercise Science/Wellness Degree

Student must successfully complete one of the following certifications before graduation.

American Council on Exercise (ACE)

As a Personal Trainer, you'll join the fastest-growing segment of the fitness industry and work with individuals who need your expertise on exercise physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, fitness assessment, exercise programming, etc.

As a Clinical Exercise Specialist you'll help bridge the gap between the healthcare industry and the health club. With your advanced knowledge and experience, you'll be able to help people who have received treatment or rehab for a health challenge and have been cleared for exercise by their physicians.

As a Group Fitness Instructor, you'll be certified to lead groups in exciting aerobic-style movements, applying your knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, exercise physiology, instructional techniques, and injury prevention.

As a Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant, you'll combine the sciences of exercise and nutrition with lifestyle change to make a real difference in the daily lives of a significant population segment.
 

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) - Clinical

Exercise Specialist

Qualifications: 4 months/600 hours practical experience; degree in allied health; prescription of activity; ability to educate and counsel; knowledge of anatomy; current CPR certification.

Cost: workshop fee - $350; certification $300 member, $350 non-member

Exercise Test Technologist

Qualifications: Knowledge of exercise testing; ability to administer tests and compile data of a test; ability to communicate and interact with patients in clinical environment; current CPR certification.

Cost: workshop fee - $399; certification $200 member, $250 non-member
 

ACSM - Fitness

Health/Fitness Instructor

Qualifications: Work experience or degree in health/fitness; knowledge in physiology, functional capacity, effects of exercise; ability to counsel & educate clients; current CPR certification.

Cost: workshop fee - $280; certification $170 member, $220 non-member
 

Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)

Primary Aerobic Instruction

Qualifications: Exercise science background; knowledge in program design; anatomy/phsyiology; ability to give proper cueing; ability to spot unsafe exercise practices; current CPR certification.

Cost: workshop and certification - $249

Personal Trainer/Fitness Counselor Certification

Qualifications: Knowledge of exercise physiology, anatomy/kinesiology; application of fitness assessments; one-on-one fitness counseling; current CPR certification.

Cost: workshop and certification - $399
 

National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)

Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)

Qualifications: Educate and train primarily athletes in proper strength training/conditioning; knowledge on evaluation of client; safety issues, spotting techniques; anatomy/kinesiology; current CPR certification.

Cost: certification $200 member, $275 non-member

Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)

Qualifications: Work with active and sedentary clients in one-on-one situations; knowledge of client assessment; safety issues, lifting/spotting techniques; anatomy and kinesiology; current CPR certification.

Cost: certification $175 member, $250 non-member

World Instructor Training Schools (WITS)
