ORDER OF OPERATIONS

What does the word order have to do with mathematics?

Math is like baking cookies, you have to take certain steps before you can put them it in the oven or you will not get cookies, you will get a mess.  For example, you must mix the ingredients before placing the dough on the cookie sheet.  Math is the same way.  If you do not follow operational steps you will not get the correct answer.

GOAL:  The goal of this webquest is for students to acquire an understanding and interest for the order of operations through on-line lessons, tutorials, puzzles, and games.

TASK #1: Go to the following website and follow the lesson.  Work all problems and make sure you understand each one before moving on.  Once you have a good understanding of basic problems, move on to Operations with Exponents and Operations with Integers.

TASK #2: Examine the following and answer the questions.  Kim and Eric both worked the following problem, but got different answers. Who is right and why?  How would you explain this to the person who is wrong?

KIM                                        ERIC

5 + 2(16 ¸4) –10                   5 + 2(16 ¸4) -10

5 + 2 = 7                                 16 ¸4 = 4

7(16¸4) – 10                         5 + 2(4) - 10

16 ¸4 = 4                               5 + 8 - 10

7 · 4 – 10                               5 + 8 = 13

28 – 10 = 18                          13 – 10 = 3

Answer = 18                           Answer = 3

TASK #4: Was the acronym helpful?  Acronyms are words formed from the initial letters of a name that help you remember certain things.  For example: I use Never Eat Slimy Worms to help me remember the order of directions going clockwise on a weather vane: North, East, South, West.  List any other math acronyms you might know or have invented.

TASK #5: Complete the following puzzle at:
